How long do they keep the passport - Delhi Office

Dear Forum,

Any suggestions/experience on how long does the Delhi office take to stamp the passport and send it back.
They received my passport on June 11 , it has been 4 weeks now.Is it because Delhi is a high volume zone?

does 4 - 6 weeks sound about right , or does it take longer? Not worried yet but just asking.

My husband got his passport back from the New Delhi CHC in 16 days. So 4 weeks does seem a little long but not completely unheard of. Maybe they are doing additional background checks. Did you travel outside of India?

what exactly do they verify in background checks.do they verify from your place of working.i am being sponsored by my husband in canada.

Yes I have travelled outside India to the US and couple of other places.What exactly is background checks.Do they check for police records in all countries I have travelled?
Also is there any way to find out from Delhi whats going on with the file? i cant find a way to get in touch with them

You could try submitting a case-specific enquiry: https://dmp-portal.cic.gc.ca/cicemail/intro-eng.aspx?mission=new%20delhi But they may not respond given that your case is still within normal processing times. Also there is no set timeframe for them to complete background security checks. They can essentially take as long as it takes to complete. They cannot issue the visa until this part is complete.

The background checks are done to ensure that an applicant is not a security risk. Security screening is done to identify persons seeking admission who are, or have been, involved in espionage, subversion, or terrorism. So yes, they will look at your travel records and anything else that they deem necessary to complete their report.

Does the Delhi office ask for the passport earlier in the application process? what really happened was that they first sent a letter to my wife asking her to pay the landed fees in Canada.Once she paid that and mailed in the receipt then they sent me the letter asking for my passport. It said 'In order to continue processing your application"
Is that how it normally is for all cases in Delhi.
Is this a good sign that they asked her to pay the fees or i shouldnt read into anything just yet?

Delhi/CSIS uses the passport for background security checks.

They typically ask for the passport when they're ready to issue a visa. So yes, that and asking your wife to pay the PR fees sounds like a good sign.

Try having your wife use her last name and the receipt number for your payment (if it was paid online).

I had sent them a case specific inquiry couple o weeks ago not expecting them to reply. But they did and this is what they had to say

Dear Sir/Madam,

This is in response to your recent email enquiry to the Immigration Section of the Canadian High Commission in New Delhi.

This file is currently pending final review by the responsible processing team and a decision by the officer. As soon as the review has taken place, our office will contact the applicants in case any further documentation or information is required.

We trust that this information will be of assistance.

The status finally changed from 'In Process' to Descision made-Medical results have been received-The office will contact you concerning the decision.
I guess this is it then.
Any idea if they mail it off right away , or they delay it a bit. I am just tired of waiting.
The status changed on Monday.

You should get your passport + visa back within a week, depending on where in India you are. Congratulations.

Finally after all this waiting the visa arrives in hand!

Actually not much waiting, Delhi finalized it under 4 months , but they kept my passport for 6 long weeks!!!!!
