Hello,

Just have a quick question. After becoming permanent resident (landed immigrant) is there a time limit beyond which one has to return back to Canada? Can one be outside Canada for more than 6 months in one stretch??

Someone said that the PR can be cancelled if one stays outside Canada for more than 6 continuous months. It that true?

No - it's not true. This rule doesn't exist.

You can be outside of Canada as long as you want provided you meet the residency requirement of living in Canada for two out of every five rolling years.

The 6 month rule is old, it was changed in 2002. The rules now say you must have at least 730 days in Canada in any rolling 5 year period. It does not have to be continuous. You have to keep good track of your travels because you will need it later when you apply to renew your PR card.
