Hi everyone,

I'm looking at leaving Canada for work in July. I will have had PR for 650 days, just short of the 730 day requirement within 5 years. When will I have to return by to stay a resident? Is early 2020 correct?
Also does the 183 day per year minimum apply to PR too?

Thanks!

You need to be in Canada for 730 days in a 5 year period so if based on your post you became a PR in 2015 you would need to spend at least another 80 days in the country between time you leave and whatever month in 2020 to meet the residency obligation. The 80 days do not of course need to be all in one go as long as cumulatively you reach the total plus take into account the day leaving and the day arriving back are considered days in Canada.

The 183 days is only relevant to citizenship applications and not the PR residency obligation.

Dear Members,

I also have a similar question regarding PR validity.

I am in India at present and would like to return to Canada by May-2017.

My Canadian residence history is below.

-> From July-2011 till July - 2014 I was on Work Permit as a Canadian resident
-> I became PR on 06 -July-2014 [PR Expiry:: 20-Aug-2019]
-> From July -2014 till Aug -2015 I was on PR as a Canadian resident
-> 26-Aug-2015 I traveled to India
-> May - 2017 I am planning to return to Canada

Could you please advise what is the latest date I should be back to Canada ? So that i dont face any issues during immigration ?

Thanks in advance!

No problem. You need to stay 2 out of 5 years n Canada to retain your PR status.
