Our case is currently pending background check. My wife has lived in three countries, and the current status according to the consulate is that the case is in background check. It was like this for 4 months now. My wife has a clean record.

Any idea what is the average time for a background check?

I am not sure if we will end up waiting for another month, three months, or another year. I am getting tried of waiting.

It would help if we at least know what is the maximum that we can expect to wait.

Thanks a lot.

Thanks for the info.

So did you contact the consulate to speed it up?

7 months for background check is too much.

I called the CIC yesterday ( and 1x every month) - no news, backround check, no time limit...if I don't get any news in 2 months I should call them again...
I have clean record and no idea why does it take that long.

Fairly substantial delays can be caused simply by you having the same name as someone with a criminal record, or if you worked for a foreign government / military. The background check is so non-transparent it's almost not worth speculating about. It takes as long as it takes, and all you can ever do is make sure that CSIS actually has the file and it didn't get lost somewhere. They won't tell you any more than that.

So working for a foreign government is an issue? I thought that would be a good thing because it shows that you are a public servant employed with no criminal records/been through security checks for the job etc.
I have been working in the government for 6 years now! :( fuck. i am tired waiting.

Thank you matthewc for the link!

After how many months waiting should I make a complaint against CSIS?

The country of government/military that you've worked/served for is also a factor. If the country has has civil unrest or war the checks will be deeper.
