How important is French?

Hello everyone! I did run a search but could not find an adequate answer to my query, and would appreciate your help/opinions, the works. I should be moving to Ottawa under family class sponsorship, my husband's a canadian. So my question is, how important is it to have a working knowledge of french in this city? And does it mean better job prospects?

Since Ottawa is very close to Quebec, it can increase your job opportunites if you speak French. Especially in any kind of profession where you are dealing with clients. If you are a specialist working with little contact to the outside world, it probably doesn't matter at all.
