It depends on two things: where you live, and how good you are.

I found a job paying $85,000 as a programmer in a couple days. Some people go months without finding a job. I did it without Permanent Residency - people with P/R have an easier time.

How good is your resume? How well do you interview? Do you have code samples? Can you handle a tough interview if they ask you to write software in the interview? What type of developer are you?

These are all questions you have to ask yourself.

If you look at WorkBC (for BC), there are currently about twice as many developers as job openings. If you can be in that upper 50%, you can likely find a job. That market is going to get better. Average salary is $66,000 to $95,000. The median software developer salary in India seems to be around $7,250 or so CAD. This may mean that you are willing to go a bit lower in salary, which can help in finding a job.

If you are a poor candidate, you will have poor chances. If you are a good candidate, you will have good chances.

Looking for a "survival" job while you get a job in tech is not a good strategy. The job market for so-called survival positions is a lot more saturated. You need to have funds set aside that will pay for your living expenses while you find a job. Finding a job needs to be your full time job.

You always need to zero in on where you want to work. Like any other place, different cities in Canada have different dominant industries. This also brings to the forefront other factors such as weather, cost of living, etc.

On a more technical note, you should look through a list of new jobs on LinkedIn on any given day and see what percentage of those positions are for Java developers. I'm guessing you don't just want a job but rather a job you like at a place you would like to work at. The start up community is hot but not if you are a JAVA dev. Are you willing to expand your skill set?

Obtaining permanent residency comes after you sort out all of the above. If you find a job and acquire enough experience, you will eventually have enough points under Express Entry.

Hi Karan,

I wonder how is the job market (for software engineers) in Ontario?
Is it much worse than in British Columbia?

Hi Kateg

Congratulation on your job. Which language do you program in? And I believe you got a job while you were in Canada right? I think getting a job while a person is outside Canada is almost impossible for a JAVA developer.

Not a lot of people realize how large Canadian provinces are. You would need to be more specific in terms of where in BC and Ontario you are referring to. However, the IT sectors in both these provinces are better placed relative to all other provinces in the country.

patel bhai,

market is good for Java developers in Toronto and GTA area also its good in West provinces.
So do not worry just apply for your PR. But still if your main goal is US then go for H1b in April.
Also Karan is right if you want a field job do not concentrate on part time jobs as applying is also a full time job..... :) :) :)

I believe that the Canada job portals should give fair idea about the job market.

monster.ca
indeed.ca

Some posts might be encouraging or discouraging. That wont change the ground level reality.
It is no doubt frightening to leave a well settled job and migrate to a new country and hunt for a job. But that's what we have to do, no choice. I am in the same boat and equally worried as we all are here.

Prepare for the worse and try for the best.

If an individual has good skills.. no matter what, he/she will succeed !

Cheers,
Amy
