Hello ALL,

I have moved Canada as a student in 2004. Completed my degree, got my job and I have been living in Canada more than a decade.

I am trying to figure out whether I am qualified to apply for citizenship before C24 hits.

I have become landed immigrant November 2012. Between November 2012 and up to date; I have been out of country approx 6 months due to work.

I plan on applying for citizenship in may 2015.

The million dollar question is, how does the days you have lived in Canada count before getting a PR?

Is it from 2004 up to date or it is from the date you apply for citizenship minus 4 years?

The last 4 yrs from the date you apply

Under the current law only the last 4 years immediately before the application is submitted counts.
Every 2 days of physical presence before PR are counted as 1 day.
Keep in mind that the law might be effective anytime after 1st of April onwards.

Thank you cprak0 and MUFC for your input.

If that's the case, 4 years being count, I am afraid I will need to wait and apply under the new bill.

Hey NSBoy902 ,

The quickest and the easiest way for you is to go here :

https://eservices.cic.gc.ca/rescalc/resCalcStartNew.do

and run your dates on the online residence calculator, the output should help you see if you qualify now or not.

You didn't give your exact dates (what day in November 2012?, gone exactly 6 months?), but you could qualify as soon as June of this year. That may or may not be before the new rules take effect. As NSBoy suggested, go to the online calculator and enter your exact dates and then you will know.

Yeah u should be eligible sometime in May, depending on your exact landing date and considering you were out for exact 6 months.

Best is calculate exact date using Online Residency Calculator.

And no one knows when is new rule starting, If it becomes applicable before May you have to wait 2 full years to become eligible again, as time before your PR will not be counted and also you will need 4 years to become eligible then.

Best option is get your paperwork ready and be ready to send as soon as you get eligible, rest depends on your luck.

All the best.

It's like most of the years you worked before work would have been counted

But now it's like

It will never be counted as you will fall in the new law which will be in effect soon
