How does a Failed Academic Standing affect approval for a PGWP?

Hello,

At the end of this year, I will be graduating from university here in Canada (a DLI). I failed several of my courses and was put on academic probation. As a result, the university would only allow me to take 9 credits, which made me a part-time student for 2 semesters. I saw online that in order to receive a PGWP you need to be a full-time student for ALL of your semesters. However, this was not possible for me.

Will they still approve my PGWP if I explain that because of my academic standing I was not allowed to be a full-time student until I got my grades up?

Also, what documentation should I get to explain my situation in my application?

Much help would be appreciated.

Lauren

No one can answer the question regarding whether your PGWP will be approved or not. Technically you do not meet the requirements since you were part time for two semesters. But we sometimes see IRCC make exceptions on a case by case basis.

You should include a letter explaining the situation - and ideally also a letter from your school confirming what happened. If there are any personal circumstances (e.g. illness) that cuse you to fail the courses, then include that information in your letter and provide supporting evidence (e.g. letter from doctor / hospital).

Ultimately it will be up to the IRCC officer they give you a break and approve you or strictly follow the rules and do not.

Good luck.

Thank you for your response!

Can I apply for a PGWP multiple times to see if I would get a different case officer to give me a different response?

If I am unable to get a PGWP, what permit should I try to apply for then?

You can't submit multiple PGWP applications at one time. That is not possible. If your first PGWP application is refused, then you can try requesting reconsideration or try applying again (if you still have time to do that) or try appealing the decision with the help of a lawyer.

If you are unable to get a PGWP approved, then your options would be:
- leave Canada and return home
- secure a job offer with an employer in Canada and an approved LMIA with that employer so that you can apply for a closed work permit
- get a new study permit and complete another full time program in Canada so that you can qualify to apply for a PGWP based on the duration of your second program
