I have applied to a college in Canada and was accepted. the course is however 8 months. is there any advice or steps on becoming a resident of Canada through the route of studying as an international student. i am from the caribbean. thanks.

Switch to a course that's at least two years long. Once you finish that diploma - you will qualify for a three year open work permit (post graduate work permit). This three year open work permit gives you the highest chances of getting the work experience or job offer you need to qualify to apply for PR through the Canadian Experience Class program or another immigration program.

The course you're taking now will only grant you an 8 month post graduate permit which will make it much more difficult to transition to PR.

So the best thing to do is switch to a 2 year program.

i have got the student visa for 8 months course and will get 8 months work permit but i wanted to ask u that can i extent my study visa for 1 more year in order to get 3 years of work permit??

On the two situations permit extension for another year programme will qualify you for 3 pgwp. I am also in that gategory and already has that as a planned route to PR

thanks for your replies, but since i am already accepted for the 8 months program can i just do another 8 months or 1 year program after finishing the first 8 month program and still qualify for PR??

Yes precisely. That 8 months is technically a year program and another one will make u technically on 2 full year study and will qualify u for 3 yrs pgwp

Finishing two programs won't allow you to apply for PR. You will have to meet other requirements before you can apply - either get a year or work experience or secure the right kind of permanent job offer.

There is already a very detailed thread at the very top of this section of the forum that covers all of the ways students can apply for PR:

Ya I think d issue is on how to get a longer post graduate work permit, it seems it's not just about done 2 one year programs, it has to be 1 yr certificate or diploma plus one year degree program. Pls can anyone clarify if d 2nd course can be a certificate program or a degree program...thanks for responses

Scylla I hope we need more than theoretical analysis here, I will appreciate if we have practical case study where it is possible or not. Pls help us go further.
