Here's the situation:
I'm Canadian, she is European. I am returning to Canada for a year of graduate school. She would like to come and work while I'm in school, it is the most economically feasible. We are common law and registered in Europe as partners.
However, by the time she gets an Open Work visa, the year will be half over and we can't really afford her to lose so much pay. Is it possible that there is a way she can come with a year long visa? Since it would be temporary, is there a way she can work?
The working holiday visa is of course an option but applications don't start for awhile...
Thanks in advance.

The only possible other option, is to find a company willing to go through the LMO process, hire her, and get a closed work permit to work only for that company.

Else she could come as a visitor, and extend her visitor status after 6 months. But she wouldn't be able to work at all.

Yeah have to second Rob in that. I was in the same position a few years ago but had to apply for the work/visit visa. Its doubtful, given your time frame whether you can get a company to sponsor your partner. I would also be very careful about her entering as a 'visitor' then working under the table. I have known a few people to do that and get caught which wont help any future applications should you want to reside in Canada at a later date!
