What is your budget and what do you need? Right now it is a buyers market in Vancouver, so you are DOUBLY LUCKY today! House prices are softening and there appears to be a good selection on the market. It changed quite suddenly in April. The amount of house your money will buy will vary greatly across Vancouver. West Vancouver, Kerrisdale, Point Grey, Dunbar, UBC areas are all high. East Vancouver, Burnaby, Surrey, Langley farther from the centre of town is lower. Google "MLS Vancouver" and you will get lots of suggestions. http://www.vancouverhomes2buy.com/forbuyers.htm This link looks like it might be helpful. Congratulations on your VISA!

Aha....you didn't SAY to rent....so here are a couple of other links: http://www.gvrd.com/real_estate_rentals/index.html This one looks easy to use: http://www.vancouverrentalproperties.net/ Renting in the area you would like to buy is always a smart idea. Good Luck. :)

Yes you can pay online (wire the money to the landlord's account).

Except I would not pay for any rental sight unseen. There have been a number of scams on Craigslist where a person who doesn't own the home, rents it to a number of people at the same time and then walks away with the money. You probably want to rent in the area where you are going to work. Vancouver Metro is pretty spread out and if you don't have transportation, you really want to live close to either transportation or where you work.

Check out the links I suggested and contact an agent to guide you. As far as I know, their fees are paid through a certain percentage of the rent, so that comes out of the owner's pocket. It will cost you nothing to email asking for help. Let the agent know where your work will be and if that is not their area, ask for a referral to the appropriate agency. I completely support PMM's caution about paying anything online into an account!!! Sadly, there have been scams like that in Vancouver.

Once you paid the deposit and first month rent, your landlord will give you instructions how to get your keys.

How many people are there in your family? Say 4 person and the daily rate is 40CAD, 2 X 40 X 14 = 1132. For about 900 CAD, you can already rent a 2 bedroom suite in a private house in Vancouver.

Like the other poster looking for a rental house in Halifax, he intially stay in a cheap hotel and in 4 days he found a house suitable for himself. Good luck.
