Hi there,
I have started a full-time field job in November-2019 as my college was completed the same month, and I was on a student visa during that time (I applied for Work Permit in Nov-19)

I got my 3-year work permit visa from the month of March-2020 to March-2023. Now, I am still working in the same company. But my hours during the COVID were fluctuating.

Please take a look at some of my example hours.
3 Nov 2019 - 16 Nov 2019 = 70 hours (bi-weekly hours)
15dec 2019 -28dec 2019 = 65 hours (bi-weekly hours)
26 Jan 2020 - 8 Feb 2020 = 48 hours (bi-weekly hours)
17 May 2020 - 30 May 2020 = 6 hours (bi-weekly hours)
14 June 2020 - 27 June 2020 = 34 hours (bi-weekly hours)

So, my question is,
  • During my Student visa, my work hours from November 2019 to Feb 2020 count in the express entry?
  • Please tell me how to calculate hours for the above example.

You can only counts hours obtained under a Work Permit. Any time worked while under a Study Permit are not counted. However, the moment you submit your application towards your PGWP you immediately earn implied status. Any work experience earned under implied status can be used towards your Canadian Experience for CEC.

In your case, it would be any time worked after Nov 19, 2019.

Jus keep adding your hours until you reach 1560 (or 1 year full time equivalent). Keep in mind, however, that you cannot count any hours worked above 30 hours each week. For instance, any week you worked for 40 hours, you can only count 30 and anything above 30h each week is forfeited.

What about the hours below?
17 May 2020 - 30 May 2020 = 6 hours (bi-weekly hours)
14 June 2020 - 27 June 2020 = 34 hours (bi-weekly hours)

Thank you for your response to my question. But, I am still very confused of how my hours will work out. Below, I am attaching all my biweekly hours since 2019 November like I mentioned before.

You already mentioned, I can start counting my hours from November 2019. That definitely makes sense to me been on implied status. Though, I am not sure how calculation would work out for such a huge mix of my hours. Also, would there be any link to support the say that the work done in implied status is been counted. I really appreciate your help a lot. Thank you!!

Max hours you can count per week is 30. Since you count your hours bi-weekly, I guess any hours beyond 60 won’t be considered.

From the IRCC website:
equal amount in part-time work: for example 15 hours/week for 24 months = 1 year full time (1,560 hours)
You can work as many part-time jobs as you need to meet this requirement.
full-time work at more than 1 job: 30 hours/week for 12 months at more than 1 job = 1 year full time (1,560 hours)

Okay got it. So, I will count all the hours except ones going beyond 60. And at the end make it 1560 anyhow. Be it 6 hrs in 3 paystubs still they would count.
Thank you! I guess should be eligible soon.

Also, make sure your hours also aligns somewhat to your reference letter. Good luck.

Any number that is 60 or +, replace by 60. Any other number, leave it as is. Since these are bi-weekly hours they would amount to no more than 30h/week.

Keep adding hours this way until you've reached 1560 hours. You'll need 52 at least to accomplish this. In your case, since some weeks are below 30 hours, you will need more for sure.

If you dont mind me asking, what do you mean when you say reference letter?
Your employment reference letter. When you get an ITA, you’ll be asked to provide supporting documentation for all the things you’re claiming points for. So if you claim points for any work experience, you’ll be asked to provide a company issued reference letter.

Okay. My company will be able to provide reference letter without a doubt. Is there any particular thing I need to have in my reference letter considering my wiggly up and down hours.

The link I posted mentions all the required details that must be in your reference letter. Since you work variables hours, your reference letter should state the same.

This is just me, but I would put in some sort of appendix/table after your reference letter showing how you calculated your work hours to claim 1 year Canadian work experience, so it’d be easier for the IRCC analyst/officer to verify. Then your paystubs.
