Hello. Im new here and im applying for common law. So far I've got one question but there will probably be more. My parents have written the letter to support us, cause it says that we need two stat declaration. Well my family have done them but there wondering on how to start and finish the letter. Can anyone please help me. Before they do like dear.... does it have to say there name and adrress or is that in the end. Do they write like they solemnly declare ..... I dont know what to tell them. Can someone post an example of their letter. Not what they wrote just on how it looks like. I went to a lawyer and he wants to charge us alot for doing it. Please help.

According to the form, it can either be completed by a notary, commissioner of oath, or commissioner of taking oaths. Not your parents.

Do a search on kijiji/craigslist for notaries in your area. They usually cost about $20-50 per signature. If you're outside of Canada, they do it at the embassy's for about $50.

No, OP is referring to support letters, not the stat declaration of common-law.

The support letters should be personal letters in the words of whoever is writing them. They should contain basic info like how the writer knows the couple, their history together, that they are aware of them living together for X years, that they support the relationship, etc etc.

I would include the writer's basic info like name, address, phone number, job title (if applicable), etc. CIC will never call to verify, but makes the letters more official.

Thank you both. The common law stat declaration will be done by a commissioner of oaths. He has already signed it for us.

It is about the letter from our parents that are stat declaration. Basically at the top of the page they have their contact details then to whom it may concern, then its their personal letter, then feel free to contact me if needed. After they are going to a lawyer and signing it in front of them, the lawyer signs it as well. Is this the correct way or do they need to write they declare it to be true..... things like that. Ive seen examples on google and their wording of contact details are much different. Thank you for your help so far.

1. A description of how you know either one of us (typically the person you knew first)...examples
I am a friend of XXX, I was a co-worker of XXX, I am the sister of XXX, etc.
2. A description of how you became aware of our relationship, when you met the other partner, activities we participated in together, etc.
3. A statement to the effect that, in your judgment, we are in a real, loving, ongoing, genuine (you choose the words) relationship based on your personal knowledge and experiences

Heres an outline that others have used, thought it might be helpful for your family members. Not sure about your last question
