Hello everyone,

There is so much great info on this board, and I'm happy to be part of it.

I am in a relationship with an American man and I live in Canada. Obviously - as everyone here can relate to - we want to be together, and do it right. I will never understand why this process has to be so complicated and confusing :(

Our plan is for him to come here, stay for a few months, and then get married. I understand he is allowed to stay here for six months without requiring a tourist visa. Here are my questions:

- When he crosses into Canada for this visit, does he have to declare that we will likely get married? It seems to me like we shouldn't say anything about it at that time.

-Once we are married here, I can apply to be his sponsor for get his residency. Is this correct?

-Does he have to leave Canada while we do this, or can he stay here on a tourist visa while we're applying for the sponsorship? Will these things conflict?

-If we are married but then he has to go back to the USA for some reason, such as family - should we hold off for a while on filing ANYTHING?

-If you get married - do you legally have to say so at customs if traveling between the USA and Canada, even if you haven't started any sort of Visa application process?

-Would it be better, perhaps, to hold off on marriage (just enjoy a nice long engagement) and have him stay here on tourist visas? I worry that he may need to leave Canada, as his musician job requires travel, and then he'll be denied re-entry or something if we're in the midst of waiting for approvals.

-I don't have a lot of money, I work as a musician also. Will this affect my application to sponsor him?

I'm getting seriously demoralized here, it seems like such a ridiculous process for such a joyful and simple thing.

If asked he should not lie, but many people state that they are visiting friends.

Yes, but it is not a simple / quick process

He can stay

No, you can apply outland while in Canada, he can travel, but getting allowed back in can be an issue for some people (depends on many things - no guarantees)

No lies if asked a question

Always a risk, the IO is the person who decides

no

Deal with it, it gets worse before getting better :)
