Hi everyone,

Could you please help me with a couple of questions I have about applying for PR in Canada?

Here is my situation: My family and I are currently in Canada on temporary work visas. I’m German, my husband is Japanese and we have two small children. I’m a postdoc fellow at a university in Quebec since November and I’m carrying out research in the Yukon since this summer (as part of my postdoc). My husband works in the Yukon. Our long-term goal is to get PR and to settle in the Yukon Territory.

We are trying to find the best way to go about realising our plan/ settling in Yukon Territory. Is it best to apply through the CEC stream: In November, I will have one year of experience working for a Canadian university, which would allow me to apply for CEC PR.

Or, is it better to apply for PR through the Yukon Nominee Program (Critical Impact Worker). My husband’s employer in the Yukon suggested to apply through this program. I tried to find information on the web about this program. I didn’t find out how much personal funds we have to show proof of. Also, I’m not sure about the processing time to get PR through the Yukon Nominee Program. Currently, my husband is on an open work permit; but by November he would need a new work permit because I’m not sure if my postdoc will get renewed (so far, his open work permit is tied to my work at the university).

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

IMHO, if you husband's employer already mentioned that applying via provincial nomination would be better, it sounds like that they would be willing to help out with that matter.

Try and call the province's office and ask for some more info. I'm sure they'll help you out

Thanks so much for your reply. Yes, it seems like a good idea to contact the immigration office here to ask some more questions.

i would suggest to go by yukon pnp.
its safe way plus if you both can extend
your work permit. if u already made your
mind for yukon then best is pnp than express
enrty. ee will not guarantee that u will get cec
invitation for apply . pnp will sure so go with pnp
good luck

Thank you. I really appreciate your help. It might be really the best way to go with the Yukon nominee program. I don't want to risk loosing our work visas. My husband's employer will run the job posting for a month to get the LMIA. Do you know if we will apply right after that for the work permit and for PR, all at the same time?
We lived in the US for a while, so we need to get US police records. The waiting time to get the records is 3 or 4 months. I hope we don't have to submit the police records right away. Would any of you know?

They don't have CEC category anymore since from Jan 2015 as there is express entry so the only 2 options you have either PNP or express entry. If your husband's employer is willing to help then you should ask him for LMI so that you can apply through express entry directly and that 3 times more faster than going through PNP PR.I know few people who got their PR through express entry within 6 months or so though for others it's taking more than year though they have PNP from their respective provinces.
