Im planning to fill out the sponsor application form. Somebody was telling me that if i sponsor her. I have to take care of her for 10 years. Is that true? What happens later if she decides to leave me. Is there anyway i can protect myself from being taken for granted

Does anybody know if you go to school part time is it possible to get a work permit.

Any help would be great.

I think under spousal sponsorship it is three years.

There is nothing that you can do to "protect yourself", once signed, you are responsible, no mater what happens.

Yes, spousal sponsorship is 3 years after the spouse lands as a PR. If she leaves you on the first day and you call immigration and complain that she committed fraud against you, it's common that they don't listen. They might tell you that you did a good job of proving during your sponsorship that your relationship was real and now you change your mind? There are cases where it's very obviously fraud that people have managed to get immigration to listen to the point of getting the persons PR revoked but I think you are still on the hook for paying for any social benefits they have taken while they were in Canada.

It's hard to prove fraud anyway. She can say she left you because you treated her badly, threatened her or beat her. Then it's her word against yours. Better make sure your relationship is for real before you sign those papers.

If somebody is a student for more than 6 months, they can apply for a student work permit which allows them to work up to 20 hours a week during semesters and full time during school holidays.

To be direct,..... if you (rather than a friend) are having thoughts about this, you must have some doubts.

The liability is very real, I would want to be very certain that this is "the one" before signing the agreement.
Sponsorship Obligations
All sponsors are required to sign an undertaking to provide the sponsored person with the basic requirements from the day they enter Canada until the term of the undertaking terminates.
The undertaking is a contract between the sponsor(s) and CIC that the sponsor will repay the government for any social assistance payments made to the sponsored person.
Sponsors remain obligated to the undertaking agreement for the entire period of the contract, even in a change of circumstances such as marital breakdown, separation, divorce, or a financial change in circumstances.
In the case of a spouse, common-law partner or conjugal partner, a sponsor is required to sign an undertaking to reimburse the federal or provincial governments from the date in which they become a permanent resident for the period of three years.

There are plenty of cases where the sponsored partner leaves after getting into Canada, some don't even make it past the first week after landing.
I have no idea about the relationship you have, but why not ask yourself "is there any reason why I should not wait a bit longer?".

If you are certain, go ahead.

For a spouse or common-law/conjugal partner, it's 3 years, but once she has her PR card, you are committed to support her for the full 3 years, no matter if she leaves you. There is no way out of it, so if you have doubts, govern yourself accordingly.

Thanks for all your everybody. I just have one more quick question.

I was told that if shes only in school for part time. She can't qualify for a work permit. Does anybody know if that is true or false.

Thanks

That could be true. If you look at http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/study/work-offcampus.asp you see that only full time students qualify for student work permits.
