We live in Mississauga, just west of Toronto. It's a great community. Lots of families, services, parks, good schools etc. It is a big city but not as big as Toronto (easy to drive, navigate, use public transport) and it is easy to get to TO from here. Hamilton is much smaller and west of us. I haven't visited the city, but from the QEW it looks very industrial. It may be a really nice place (I don't know) but doesn't make a great impression from the highway.

One thing I definitely know is property is cheaper there (I had searched when I was there). Saw only from GO train. I heard that city was once industrial boom but now loosing charm as some factories have already moved/closed (thats what my local friend told me). I read in BirtExpat forum there is another town nearby (I couldn't recall it) where English families prefer to live.

But, MissiS or Scarborough could also be a good alternate if you don't mind diversity.

I can only help you by describing Hamilton, I lived there 4 months as a part of my school's program and returned to Mexico (But looking to come back and settle if possible). Hamilton is indeed smaller than Toronto, but it still is a pretty big town. And while it is an industrialized town, it is in my opinion beautiful and peaceful (take into account I was there on 2006 and I am from Mexico), had no problems at all over there and most of the people I met were nice, kind and had no problem on helping me with directions, advice, etc (I guess that's just the Canadian way, but mind I also met people who on instances were very aggressive).

I lived at CIC's pinehall residence on mountainview, which seemed a rather serene area away from downtown. summer is warm, which was nice, and winter, well I did not experience it, so I cant help you there. What I loved about Hamilton was the vast array of lakes and creeks.

I loved that place so much Id rather have you asking me questions, because I cannot describe in a post all the awesomeness!

But do mind that on optimal weather Hamilton is 40 minutes away from Toronto

Hamilton is an industrial city in decline like all North American industrial, but probably not as bad as Windsor. Housing is cheaper than in Toronto, where the average price of a house is now over $400,000. Traffic can be bad on the QEW heading into Toronto--if that is where you will work.

Hi igotink!

If you don't mind why you want to move to Toronto from Alberta?

I got my PR but yet to land in canada; I am in dilemma between Calgary/Edmonton and Toronto.

Your suggestions would be appreciated.

Blue Ocean

Avoid Jane & Finch and Malvern area in Scarborough. Worst places to live in Canada
