Hi my name is Elena, I am new to the forum but have been doing alot of reading here, very helpful.
I recently married my boyfriend of a 10 months on May 17, 2014.
I am in the process of completing the inland application for me to sponsor him, as he is from Greece but living here now with me, we met while he was visiting here.

I have several questions hoping that I can get some assistance.

1. When doing the inland application do I need provide the police clerance checks upfront? Does it include finger prints? or will they request it later on?

2. Do I need to wait the six to eight weeks to obtain the marriage certificate to apply, can I send them the temporary one that I have?

3. When sending the open work permit with the inland application to sponsor a spouse what exactly is the form? I can't seem to find it on the CIC website.
If someone can post the link I would appreciate it.

4. Meds should they be done when requested or before submitting the inland application?.

I am a canadian citizen.

Thank you I really appreciate it :)

Also consider sending an outland application. There are pros and cons to both - but I just hope you gave it some thought!
If he applies inland, and needs to leave the country and doesn't get back in for some reason, his application will automatically be cancelled. If he applies outland and needs an interview, he will have to travel to Rome.

Although the processing time for Rome is posted at 13 months, look at the Rome thread, many people are completing the process in 5-6 months, which would be faster than getting an OWP using the inland process. Of course, there is the chance that outland can take 13 months too.

Sorry, I can't help with any of your other questions because I applied outland.

1. Yes, you should send police checks with application packet. Process varies by country. For the US, I had to get my finger prints done and send the finger print card, along with the request form and payment form, to the FBI for processing. Here's the information CIC provides for Greece: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/security/police-cert/europe/greece.asp

2. Not sure, but I've read on this forum complaints from others about how long the marriage certificate takes and that they are waiting for it before they send their applications, so I think people generally wait for the official one.

3. Pretty sure the form can be found here: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/applications/extend-worker.asp. Hopefully someone will come along who can confirm. (IMM 5710)

4. If you file outland, you need to do the medical up front and include the receipt with your app. If you file inland, you can do it either way. If you do it up front, before you submit your app, the risk is that the process will take longer than a year (medical results are good for one year from the date the exam was done), and CIC will not opt to grant you an extension, and you'll have to do the exam again anyhow (so you have to pay twice for the exam). If you opt to wait for CIC to ask for a medical exam, you risk possibly delaying your process some.

I added a lot of confusion to this part of the process for myself. I *didn't* get a medical up front (I was just dumb, it wasn't a "decision" I made). I started stressing out about the lack of medical delaying my process. I ended up deciding (against the advice of CIC's call centre representatives) to get an "up-front" medical AFTER I submitted my app but BEFORE CIC requested it. I had a UCI number, and thankfully CIC was able to match the results to my file. I'm very happy I made that decision, as, after a ten-month wait for AIP ("approval in principle" also known as sponsor approval or stage one approval), I got AIP and DM ("decision made," also known as stage two approval) on the SAME day. (This is not "usual," but it's not completely unheard of, either.) If CIC had needed to request my medical, it would have added months to the processing of my application.

Thanks for the help :D
Also, another question pertaining to the police clearance check. Does this include fingerprints? or are finger prints only required from US?

My husband has been here for more than a year on a visitor visa, will he need to include a police certificate and records from here in Canada? We live in Toronto, so can we obtain same from our local police station?

Since I am sponsoring him will I need to get a police check?

Thanks again, its all a bit confusing.

i would imagine all police checks require fingerprints to process. you will need to check the country's specifications for applying.

as an applicant, your husband does NOT need to get a police check from Canada. CIC will run their own background check if he's been there long term.

You do not need a police certificate. He doesn't need one from Canada. (CIC does, sometimes, request an RCMP check, usually only when there's someone with a similar/identical name who has a police record. I believe that's pretty rare.) He will need a police certificate from any country in which he lived for 6 months or more since he was 18. I don't know about individual countries' requirements. I linked to the information provides about Greece. Beyond that, you'll need to research what is required to get the police certificate.

As someone else said above, have a look at the outland process. Your husband is allowed to apply outland even if he is in Canada. There is no requirement to apply inland just because he's in the country.

Rome processes 50% of apps within 8 months, so it's a fairly quick office.

Have a look at the outland Rome thread http://www.canadavisa.com/canada-immigration-discussion-board/rome-office-t189732.150.html

Neither Germany nor Italy need fingerprints to process police checks, so I wouldn't be surprised if Greece didn't require them either.

Just a little FYI!

Neither does the UK, France, Australia or New Zealand.
