Hi all, Little bit of a back story,
I'm Canadian
Husband is irish
We have lived in Canada before, I met him when he was on a 2 year work visa
Currently living in Ireland for the past year
Wanting to get back to Canada ASAP

Few questions here -
I know we are able to stay in canada up to 6 months without being able to work,
We have a place to stay and enough funds for a few months.
Q1. We will need an ETA but does he also need a Medical Exam?
Q2. Once we are there are we allowed to send out an inland PR application? or will my husband have to return to Ireland?
Q3. How long does it take for PR to be accepted ?
Q4. Is there anything we should look out for when going into Canada for his sake.
Q5. Will we be questioned at the border if we do not have a return ticket?

We lived in Canada which is where we met and we cant wait to get back sooner than later,
any help and tips would be greatly appreciated.

  1. Not at this point in time
  2. Yes
  3. Processing is about 12 months average. Sometimes it's faster, sometimes it's not.
  4. Your husband should avoid looking like he is moving to canada to live. When he arrives. He's still a visitor. CBSA may refuse him entry if they feel he is not a genuine visitor.
  5. Good chance he won't even be allowed on the plane without a return ticket. Airlines generally won't allow visitors on the plane without one as they can be held liable for flight costs if the visitor is rejected by CBSA.

Thank you,
another thing is an ETA the same as a visitor visa ?
Or is that different paper work entirely ?

One last question in regards to the airline ticket, would it be best if we both have return tickets to avoid any problems?

As a Canadian, you don't need one. Is it going to make it easier,...impossible to say. The CBSA officer you meet is the one who's going to decide at the POE. All depends on that specific persons mood, attitude, caffeine intake, etc. on that particular day. Read up and become familiar with dual intent, make sure your husband is clear when he arrives that he is a "visitor" whether you intend to apply or not for a PR and understands and communicates he is aware and required to leave at the end of his visit. Remember, it's the only contact you have with CBSA is entry. After that, you can apply to extend his visit and you shouldn't have any contact with IRCC/CBSA unless there are issues with your application or you leave Canada again.
