my boyfriend currently lives in Canada. i’m planning on moving in with him. what documents do i need? under what terms would i be able to live there with him?

You can only live in Canada if you have permanent residency or some sort of permit that allows you to move to Canada (e.g study permit, work permit).

Under what status is your boyfriend living in Canada? Is he a Canadian citizen or PR? Have you lived together for at least one year continuously?

i believe he’s living in canada under PR. we have not lived together at all. i am moving to be with him and start our life together. i don’t plan to work for a while once i love to be with him, does that mean i’d have to apply for permanent residency? after i move we might only be living there for 6-8 months, how would applying for permanent residence fall into play there?

You can't simply move to Canada. All you can to at the present time is visit him temporarily.

but what would be the steps to moving?

You'd either have to get a student visa, work visa, or get married or he can sponsor you for PR if you want to live in Canada. Otherwise you can get a 6 month TRV and try to renew it every 6 months with no guarantees.

You can't do this.

You can only "visit" Canada if you arrive at the border as a US citizen. If you have car full of your luggage, no real ties to US, and tell CBSA you are moving to Canada, most likely you'd get denied entry and possibly a temporary ban to enter Canada again.

To truly "move" or "live" in Canada you must have PR status already, or a valid work or study permit. None of these you have at this point.

To "visit" Canada you should have luggage typical of a visitor, tell CBSA you are just visiting and prepared to go back to US within less than 6 months (so if flying you should show a return ticket), and be able to show some ties to the US (like open accounts, address, etc).

Once inside Canada as a visitor, you can then apply to extend your visitor status as it comes due. Of course all this time you will be unable to work.

After living with your partner for 1 year like this, you would then be common-law so only then can he sponsor you for PR.
