Could anyone please suggest good 1BR apartment/condo rental options in rent in North York and Etobicoke. We are a family of three members and my child needs admission to an elementary school (grade 6). Which all locations are good and safe in North York, Etobicoke and Scarborough? (I want to use the public transport option (TTC) to commute to down town Toronto. That is why, we are not preferring Mississauga. (Our budget is around 1000 - 1500 CAD )).

We are planning to reach Toronto by end of August-16. (We are from India and currently working in UAE).

Thank you in advance.

Most tenancies start from 1st day of each month, so you would probably need to stay in a hotel upon arrival. For now, you can search craiglist for available listings in September.

Try viewit.ca

Most locations in Toronto in your price range would be of similar quality (not the worst). Convenience wise, Don Mill/Eglinton area (thorncliffe in particular) or Victoria Park/Danforth area might be better suited for you. Heavily southasian cultural background. Schools/shopping/transportation. Downtown closeby.

Btw, your child will need to be admitted to Middle school...not elementary.

By August-16, I assume you mean end of August, 2016?

Thank you steaky and BonManush.

We are planning to come to Toronto by end of August 2016.

In some schools, grade 6 is considered as elementary, right ?

Is reference or job required for renting out an apartment ? If we don't have friends or relatives for reference, how we can rent out good apartment before getting a job ?

Thank you in advance.

You can sweeten the offer by giving the landlord 6 months rental plus damage deposit in advance. Make sure you buy your tenancy insurance, so that your personal items stored in the rented unit will be covered.

Could you please provide address of some good apartments (1 BR, near to good schools (for a grade 6 child) and subway) in North York ?

Thank you in advance.

Don Mills/Eglinton (lots of different buses to subway - new subway coming in few years)
Don Mills/Sheppard (subway)
Yonge/Finch (subway)

I would stay away from Flemingdon Park (Don Mills & Eglinton). It has a bad reputation. I can't comment on any other areas.

Don Mills and Eglinton gets a bad rep from the stuff used to happen in the past from 20 years ago. But it's still same as anywhere else now. A lot of it has been "cleaned" up. New developments happening. Subway coming soon.

I would still say the condos across from the Gateway Elementary school or walking distance from Valley Park Middle school are very very family friendly. That's more near Don Mills/Overlea area. I mentioned Don Mills/Eglinton to draw a point in the map when searching for places. I should've been a little more specific.

Again, I can't speak for the entire area - but the Flemingdon Park stuff is not 20 years ago. It was still happening 3 years ago at least. I had a friend living in a condo overlooking that area for several years and police / ambulances were there constantly up until the time she moved. If it's cleaned up since then - then great, that's good to hear.
