I am a Canadian Citizen who is engaged to be married to a non-Canadian citizen. She has been here on a School Visa for about 4 years and has now applied for a post graduate work permit. We are getting married in Canada in about a month. I think that we have everything regarding the marriage worked out, didnt seem to difficult, but what do we do next? We plan on staying in Canada which would mean that she would need to become a Canadian Citizen. When should she be applying for her PR? Should we wait for the work permit to go through? Wait for the marriage? Her application for the work permit was just submitted a week ago.

Any advice or guidance would be appreciated.

I suggest you get the study permit first, then wait a few months and marry. You can claim that the decison to marry was not made at the time of renewing the student visa.

Then you apply for Permanent Residency (PR) inland. Inland takes longer than applying from outside Canada, but you want to be in Canada anyway.

The only caution is that if your spouse exits Canada before getting the PR, make sure the study visa will allow him/her back into Canada, since the pending PR application might muddy the waters.

This needs advice from a senior.
