Help on type of work visa please

Hi all,

I see the great responses and am really hoping someone can help me.

I am a dual British-Candian citizen living in the UK with my partner who is British.
We are hoping to move over to Canada for at least a year or two - test the water and see if we want to move their permanently.

I know I am able to do this (being Canadian) and am able to work, but my partner will need to apply for... and this is where I get stuck.

As much as we would love to stay in Canada, we felt we should test it out for a little while first, which is why PR is a bit daunting as it is a lot of work if only for a little while- or is it worth it even for that?
Temporary visa is a possibility but not ideal as we will be coming from 9 months travelling in Asia and therefore lining up a job for him and being in the UK during the application process is not ideal.
Would the International Experience be the only way to approach this?

Yes - assuming you both want to work - the International Experience visa will work best (assuming your partner qualifies).

There's really no other options that's an easy fit for your plans.

Do you know if there is such a thing as a 'spousal work permit'?

Do you mean a work permit for your partner based on the fact that you're a Canadian citizen? If that's what you mean - then no, there isn't.

There are work permits for the spouses of foreign workers and students but not for Canadians and PR's. They expect you to sponsor your spouse for PR.

There is however a pilot program in Ontario for spouses of certain returning Canadians and PR's. That is if you are a health professional or university professor, you may qualify, see http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/department/media/backgrounders/2011/2011-01-30.asp However, you also have to have applied to sponsor your spouse for PR to get this.
