Simply show your employement period as a part-time employee .... But it wud be more than gud if you show your job designation which is very much relevant with ur studies ....!!

@watertruck

You can add your study and employment period separately.

For example:
2011-01 to 2012-04 (study)
2011-01 to 2012-04 (working)

If you need more space you can attach additional page with your application form. For more details you can read instruction guide by the given link:

Yes, you there are different sections for both i.e. Education and Employment background....
Mention the required information in its respected box...
I suggest you should go to the institution in which you are studying and ask them to issue you a character certificate.. It may justify your claim that you are currently a student and working in an organization as for practical training.....!
Another idea is to don't show yourself as an employee but show yourself as a trainee.... Again you are safe ...

The part of the application where it says that how long do you want to stay in Canada, will I have to state the entire study period or just the first year of study (in case you are wondering what application form I am talking about it is the IMM 5457B). According to the new information I am assuming that this form also has to filled out regardless of what type of visa is being applied.

Any help appreciated. Thanks.

You have to write the proposed period of study which is mentioned on your Letter of Acceptance from the institution...
i.e. The course starting date and the ending date .
