Hi all, i'm new here. I am about to submit my initial application to Nova Scotia under FSW (i qualify) but it says to pay in Canadian funds. I am apllying from Nigeria and for 3 weeks i have been looking for Canadian dollars to make a draft in. It is scarce and almost impossible to find $1100 (we are 2) through both official and black market channels.. So i have decided to send the application in US dollars with a little excess to hedge against exchange rate fluctuations. What are the chances it'll be accepted this way?

i'll Strongly advice that you pay this fee in $CD as it is their requirement. i have seen a case where someone's form was returned because he paid the fee over with just $50 and they asked him to send the appropriate fees. so it is advisable to send what they asked for. try to get the Canadian dolls..
good luck.

if you pay in US$ you are wasting your time as the application would be coming back.

How can i get bank draft or certified cheque in canadian dollars? No bank in Nigeria will issue me such a thing as that currency is not common here. I can't send cash even if i lay my hands on it. Money order is outdated here. I am in a fix and i do not know what to do. I thought it would help if i sent it with what is obtainable here and with a cover letter explaining my reason for doing so they would accept it. I cannot get a bank draft in Canadian dollars! Any suggestions?

Have you tried First Bank, Union Bank, UBA, Zenith Bank, GTB.
This are banks top banks in Nigeria.

Go to their head office for this kind of transaction, they will charge you a fee,
and issue you with the draft

Just ask them you want them to issue you an international bank draft in canadian dollars.

Regards

Hi Jada,

I also sent in an application for my friend from Nigeria. Eventhough we sent in funds in US$ and are expecting a return.. What we plan to do is get someone who has an account in Canada make out a cheque to us and we'll payd him US$ here in Nigeria. ( we have found someone like that - just waiting for the return of our application before we proceed). I hope you can find a canadian citizen resident in Nigeria do same for you.

Tboi, thanks for the advice. I went to GTbank and they said no. I am in aba presently. My uncle in lagos went to his bank and they said they only issue drafts in US dollars, that was intercontinental bank. A friend in port harcourt toured some banks for me and they all said only US dollars, pounds and euro. Everyone goes blank when i mention canadian dollars. Were you able to get a draft in Canadian dollars from any of these banks or do u know someone who did?

mot,
thanks for replying bt i did not understand what u wrote. Did u send the application to the nova scotia office with a draft in US dollars or the person with the canadian account is going to get the draft for you and the post your application. Please clarify.

Hi jada,
i am also from nigeria and i can tell u authoritatively dat if 1.if u send USD draft, they will return it 2.there is absolutely no bank in naija dat does Canadian dollars even at their head offices, trust me cos my husband works with a bank n even his bank couldn't get him one,we had to send money to my friend in canada who now raised d draft and couriered it to us.ur only option is to try someone in uk,us as ppl in these countries can raise drafts in canadian dollar or canada
hope this helps

Abisola thank you, that really helps. I will do that just that it will delay my sending the application. Na wa o!

Hello Jada, Why dont you try Baclays Bank. They are situated on MUSON centre on Onikan Lagos. They will issue a draft in canadian dollars for you. Im very sure of that, except they have changed lately.

Jada, I think I agree with Abisola and fathertee. Try Barclays first - they are located at south gate House, Udi Streetk Osborne Estate, Ikoyi. Try 7901346/7 and ask first. All the best. No pain, No gain!

Fathertee and mot thank you so much. I will call Barclays bank. I am beginning to dislike that quote "no pain no gain". Unfortunately it is the truth.

Please what is the status of your applications? Fathertee and mot or are you already in canada?

mot, are you sure about the address and phone number you gave me? Particularly the phone number because i can't get through. It's not even ringing. Is Barclay's operational in lagos? I asked some of my peeps in Lagos and they said it either doesn't exist or is about to commence operations. Please reply.
