Hi everybody,

I hope you're gonna be able to help me.
I applied for CEC last July, the application is for me and my common law.
On April 17th, I got medical request for both of us.
On April 25th, I got the biodata and RPRF request,
On the email, it says if I intend to get married prior to becoming a permanent resident, I need to submit a letter advising when and where the marriage will take place.
We're getting married in August in France and leaving Canada on August 3rd.
By looking at the timelines, we should probably getting our PR in June/July, that means we won't be married prior to becoming PRs.
What should I do? Should I just ignore this part? Will it be a problem?
Instead of sending our passports, we will just drive to the US border, will they ask?

Thank you very much

well she is already in your application as a common law. she did the medical with you. before end of june you guys will be PR, by driving to the us border. the email CIC sends is a standard template email. so there is nothing to worry here I guess...

I suppose your status will change from Common law partner to Married.. so you will need to inform them about the status change.

Thanks guys for your quick response.

I have another question about the same situation.
When we get passport request for PR, do we need to send it by mail or we can just drive to the border to get the stamp? Is this what you called "landing"?
During this process, if I understood correctly the officer will remove my work permit, correct?
And stamp a "temporary" PR before getting the card (50 days), correct?
So during these 50 days, I heard we CANNOT travel at all, and as you know I already booked my flight to France in August.
The timelines look really tight, no? Should I land on my way back to France at the airport at the end of August?

Thanks again for your help

No - these are 2 separate steps - the passport request is to issue your permanent resident visa and send you the Confirmation of Permanent Residence (COPR) documents. You have to "land" at a port of entry with the COPR (and visa, if applicable). If you are from a visa-exempt country, you do not get a visa stamped in your passport.

You need to follow the instructions that you receive. If they request that you send the passports, you send the passports.

Your COPR will be stamped - you need to keep this document (you need to keep it in any case. If you intend to apply for citizenship in the future, KEEP the COPR document).

So during these 50 days, I heard we CANNOT travel at all, and as you know I already booked my flight to France in August.

It is possible to travel while waiting for the PR card, but it's not particularly easy. You can enter Canada as a PR with the COPR, but it becomes an issue if you travel by air, a travel document may be required. When you are abroad, you can apply for a "Permanent resident abroad" travel document that will enable you to board an airline without the PR card. You should check with your airline first about their policy in this matter.
http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/applications/travel.asp

When CIC issues your COPR, it will give you a deadline by which you have to land. As long as you land before that deadline, it's OK. Please note that if you wait to land until after you are married, you MUST inform CIC about your planned wedding. It should have no impact on your status, tho, since as far as CIC is concerned, you are already married.
