According to the "Applications for permanent residence programs subject to the Express Entry completeness check" page, https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/corporate/publications-manuals/operational-bulletins-manuals/permanent-residence/express-entry/applications-received-on-after-january-1-2016-completeness-check.html

there's a PDF file "IRCC’s permanent resident card photo specifications (PDF, 614.24KB)" detailing how the photo should look like for the upload, in which it requires one to write on the back of the photo information on the studio (date, address, etc).

However, at the document upload page, the instructions for digital photo (access through the "?" mark sign right next to it) ask for the photo's digital file in JPEG version.

What should I upload? The original digital JPEG file, or the actual photo's front and back scan?

Follow the instruction on upload page and upload a digital photo in JPEG format.

No need to scan and show the back of the printed photo.
