Dear all,

Terribly sorry as I'm sure this subject has been broached before, so forgive the repetition.

My partner is moving to Toronto in about a week (with COPR in hand). He will need to have his health insurance covered for the next 3 months and we find ourselves unsure of which provider would be the best. Does anyone have a recommendation? He's in perfect health, and a British national.

Cheap would be great - we've seen some very expensive ones - but not so cheap that if something happens it's really next to useless (we'd like our cake and to eat as well).

Thanks in advance.

if you google "canada travel insurance", a bunch of companies will pop up. i do know the following one has packages for "inpatriots" (landed immigrants waiting for healthcare). i am not sure about pricing though. it seems you have to call one of their local partners to sign up for a plan. if you get some info on pricing, definitely share how much it will cost!

There is no such thing as "cheap" medical insurance for coverage equivalent to OHIP coverage. You gotta pay the price if you want same coverage as OHIP for 3 months. We took a gamble and not bothered to buy insurance for my wife for 11 months before she finally gotten OHIP coverage. Knock on wood, no serious health problems occurred.

Use this site to compare plans/prices from several providers: https://www.kanetix.ca/travel-visitors-to-canada

Basic plans are in the $50 per month range and can be done entirely online (if no special circumstances). My wife used one of the companies from here, we ended up making a claim, and had no problems at all.

I purchased emergency coverage through Manulife for my wife while she waited for OHIP eligibility:

I would recommend them.

Thank you to all who responded. We got my partner insurance from Blue Cross and will be landing tomorrow!
