Hello! My husband is a Canadian citizen (also born in Canada). But our baby was born abroad. We have applied for her Citizenship Certificate through the Canadian Embassy. It is still in progress (gotta wait approx 6 months). We were planning on moving back to Canada soon.

The question is, wheather or not she gets free health care before her Citizenship Card is issued? Because as a baby she needs to see a doctor monthly and get several shots. How do we obtain her Health Card? Do we have to wait until she gets her papers done and then go Canada?

Thank you!
Best regards,
Baffiee :)

1. Unless you are moving to Alberta/Manitoba or Nova Scotia there is a 3 month waiting period after you arrive in the Province.

It will be the same for your husband as well if he has been out of the country for an extended period of time.

It is ok cause my husband resides right now in Canada. I guess we just have to wait here until our baby gets the Citizenship Certificate.

What about vaccines for babies? Can we transfer our shot schedule from Europe to Canada?

Even after getting citizenship certificate, your child may still be subject to a 3-month wait before being eligible for provincial healthcare. It really depends what province you're moving to.

It is Saskatchewan.

We can also try to recieve a Canadian passport before getting the Citizenship Certificate. If so, will we be able to apply for Health Card in Europe having just a passport as a proof of citizenship and wait until it is all settled?

You can only apply for a healthcare IN Saskatchewan once you have established residency there.

You are lucky that Sask. seems to be one of the more generous provinces in granting healthcare to returning citizens on the day they arrive. Read here for more: http://www.ehealthsask.ca/HealthRegistries/Pages/health-benefits-eligibility.aspx
Special Classes of Newcomers
Saskatchewan Health covers health services for certain special classes of newcomers from outside Canada who move to Saskatchewan on or before the first day of the third calendar month after arriving in Canada. If you are among the groups identified below, you may be eligible for benefits from the day you move to Saskatchewan..
-returning Canadian citizens
