Health card while waiting for PR

Hello everyone. I am on a visitor record right now and have applied for PR. I would like to get a Health card as I found an information on a government website (https://www.ontario.ca/page/documents-needed-get-health-card) that it is possible for someone who already applied for PR. However, I called Service Ontario and I was told that I could get my Health card just after I receive confirmation of Permanent Resident.

If anyone has/had similar situation or know what to do, please advise. I really need it as I am pregnant and not sure when I will get my PR.

On what basis have you applied for Permanent Residence? In other words, which immigration class?

I believe that you must be at least at this point in your application.

Approved in principle / Approval in principle (AIP)

Your application is “approved in principle (AIP)” if:

• you have received a letter from IRCC stating that you meet the permanent residence eligibility requirements, but
• you still have to pass the medical, security and background checks for you and, if needed, your family members.

For now I got the letter from IRCC that states that my application was received and they are reviewing it to determine if it meets the requirement of complete application...(in short). Could you please let me know on what step will I get the latter that states application is "approved in principle"?

AIP only applies to specific family class sponsorships. You will not qualify for OHIP until after you have become a permanent resident.

Thank you! I see there is no way for me, even thought the information on the website states another.

Do you know if it will be enough to get a confirmation of Permanent Resident or I should wait until I get my PR card and just after could apply for Health card?

You need to use the COPR to land and become a permanent resident before you will qualify for OHIP. There is also a three month wait once you land.

If paying for the pregnancy out of pocket is a concern for you, strongly recommend you consider having the child in your home country.
