Hi
someone else asked me to check on this for them. Is it possible for someone to have a visa that is for a longer time than their work permit? (i would assume so if they have applied for the visa separately...) and this brings this question to mind (if they have the visa already) would that mean that once when they get at the POE (Toronto) they will get their work permit and have to pay the $150 CDN fee right there and then?

thanks a lot everyone!

If this is the initial work permit, no need to pay the $150. Some are given longer TRVs than the WP others the opposite. Depends upon the visa officer the length of time granted. Length of time for a WP depends on the contract/job offer.

If you have TRV (visitor visa) it is either single or multiple entry. It just has an expiry date, and once it is used, (single entry) that is it. It has no relationship to the duration of the work permit. Yes, if you haven't paid for your work permit overseas, then you will have to pay on entry. If you apply overseas and are issued a TRV, the cost of the TRV and the work permit are $150. If you apply separately, it will cost you $225.

ok i'm confuse cos i got 2 different answers.
he has a multi entry visa already. he don't have his WP yet cos he has a visa already so he didn't apply for the wp to get his visa.
his work is for 12 months. so alright lets say he gets here and the officer gives him entry for 12 months, does he still pay another 150 to get his WP, does anyone here knows, there must be ppl on here that has arrived in canada on a current multi entry visa and got their WP at the POE.

so if i understand this right, he ends up paying twice practically the multi visa fee which he already has (too late to apply just as a wp now) and the WP fee on arrival? :'(

i hope his employer can pay this fee for him then.

thanks

No, he's not paying twice. These are two different documents with two different purposes. One allows you entry into Canada (visa). The other allows you to work (work permit).

well he will be paying twice because if he would have applied for just the work permit first, instead of the visa, it says on the CIC website that they only charge for the work permit fee ($150) and give you your visa in that same price (you don't pay any extra), where as the other way around, he has already applied and got his visa, he has to apply and pay separately for his wp now as far as i understand what you wrote...

If when he applied it was for a work permit and was given the visa then he does not have to pay the $150.00 at the POE. But if when he applied, it was just for the visa, then he would have to pay the WP fee at the POE.

Because if he had applied for a Multiple Entry WORK visa there would have been no extra charge at the POE for the work permit.
