Any tips? This can't be done in my country and I really hope I don't have to travel to do it.

I took them myself. Bought some fingerprint ink from Amazon and used a rubber roller to spread the ink in a very thin layer on a glass plate. Take a look at the FBI website - there are instructions on how to take fingerprints and what makes acceptable prints. There are also some videos on youtube showing how to take fingerprints, so you can also check them out.
 
I did it myself with just simple stamping ink and printer paper. Download the form from FBI site (multiple copies). There are a couple of Youtube videos that teach the correct technique. Practice for a couple of days, then when you feel confident take 5-7 copies and send them.
