I think the most common and easy to get part time job for a student is either fast food or restaurant.

How hard it is to find a job depends on how hard you look and what the unemployment rate is where you are.

Fast food usually pays a little above minimum wage. Minimum wage varies by province. Working in a restaurant might pay minimum wage but then you get tips.

You do not have to be physically strong to cope with cold. You have heat in your apartment. This is usually included in the rent. The school and workplace will also be heated. The only time you have to worry about is waiting for the bus (unless you have a car and then it is waiting for your car to warm up). If you bundle up, you will survive a 5 minute wait for the bus.

If you work in fast food, sometimes you get free food or a discount but students are generally not known in particular for their healthy eating habits.

If you are an international student in Canada, you first have to study for 6 months before you can apply for an off campus work permit and it takes another couple of months to get it so you are already in Canada for quite some time before you start looking for a part time job. To find a fast food job, you can both try internet and also just looking at places you pass by to see if they are hiring. They will usually have a sign outside. If they do, even if they don't, you can go in and ask about a job and fill out an application.

Canada has a fast job market and also a fast housing market. Many countries have a 3 month notice period to quit your job or to leave a rented apartment but in Canada you can quit your job with 2 weeks notice and once your lease is up, you can leave your apartment with 1 month notice. Canada does not have a strong social safety net like many countries in Europe so you have to make sure you stay employed. Canadians have no problem moving across the country to find a job so if you lose your job, you can have a new one fast, new apartment fast and new friends fast in your new town but even with this speed in society, Canadians are still relaxed and laid back. Nobody is getting very excited or impatient either when driving or when waiting in line somewhere. I think I should also mention the health care system because in most provinces you pay no fee to be covered and even when you do, it is low. Going to the doctor costs you nothing and medication is not very expensive. The school system is also good. I give Canada 4 points out of 5, only because no country is perfect.

Hi Leon

6 months of stay in Canada or 6 months of study? I mean if a student goes there for January 2012 session, there will be summer vacations after April and we will only have studied 4 months by then. Does that mean one has to wait for the next semester to start again after vacations, study 2 months and then apply for off-capmus work permit somewhere in november 2012? Or we can apply for it in june 2012 irrespective of the fact that we have studied for whole 6 months or not?

Hope you have got the question. It was a bit long. But this scenario is actually quite confusing. Please reply. It will be of huge help to everyone hoping to go there in the upcoming winter session.

6 months of study, not stay, see http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/study/institutions/guide-dir.asp#part1_8 for further info:

Examples of six months of full-time studies:
Students who begin full-time studies in January but are not enrolled in full-time studies during certain summer months would not be eligible to apply for a work permit until they had completed a full six months of studies. Students studying full-time from January until the end of April, who take a four month summer break and then resume full-time studies in September, would be eligible to apply in November (January to April, plus September and October = six months).
If you are able to register for a summer semester, you could also study during the summer and apply for the off campus permit in July.
