Hi,

I have job offers in Halifax vs Ottawa. Which city is better in terms of Cost of living, weather, and stable work?
Please let me know.

Thanks

i'm in ottawa now. my husband and his family used to live in halifax. i would def say the ottawa market is more stable. it is a government town, which means the housing market is stable (lots of new builds and prices are reasonable) and so is the economy. i don't think the same can be said for halifax. in my opinion, if you have a full time job offer in ottawa, TAKE IT! That is certainly not easy to come by and takes settlers/unemployed canadians MONTHS to secure. A lot of jobs start off as contract or part time work, then gets bumped into full time. (from what i've been told by recruiters) Plus there is a large amount of unionized workplaces (again, because of the gov't town thing), which makes it more difficult to get into.

also, Ottawa is much closer to other things. (ie: less than 10 min to quebec border, 2 hours from montreal, 4-5 hours from toronto, 1-2 hours from the us, etc.) Halifax... not so much!

Yes I have a full time in Ottawa and a Incorporated contractor in Halifax. Ottawa salary is like 25K /annum less than Halifax, thats why I am tempted to Halifax.
Do you think I can switch jobs easily in Ottawa?

internally, it would depend on the company. if you're looking to switch companies, it will certainly take some time. first, you need to prove yourself in the ottawa market, after that it's really all about timing - the right opportunity comes your way at the right time. everyone's circumstance is different, so it depends on your level of experience, your specific role, how well you adapt to the environment, what you are looking for and what the employer is looking for.

Personally, I would focus on more than just the money. that's me.

Sure, Nova Scotia could pay you more. At the same time, what will Nova Scotia offer you beyond a lofty paycheck? Its a beautiful place i'm told, and at the same time i'm also told there isn't much out there for professional opportunity. Perhaps there are locals on here who can provide more insight to that area...

good luck with your decision!

Decided to go with Ottawa.
Appreciate your help !!

Is Halifax actually good for new immigrants

Thinking of Dartmouth or Cole harbour

Currently public transit in Halifax is suspended due to blizzard. Snow is as high as a single house in some areas. So are you ready to live with such condition?

Thanks steaky,

Is that condition a permanent thing or it will disappear after a while.

When I lived in Halifax in 1997-2001, it was so nice and a very beautiful province to live in. Now the weather all over the world is a bit off so of course you will see more snow now than before. I'm sure it will change again hopefully towards better and not worse.
