I am an Indian citizen living in Michigan, US on H1B work authorization. I want to travel for a week to Ottawa for which I plan to apply for Canadian visa. But my situation is that my earlier US visa expired and I renewed my H1B work permit petition and also got new I-94 which is valid till Jan 2017. But I don't have the new US visa stamping on my passport as I didn't got out of US. I have a valid Canada Work Permit. In such scenario, considering I get the Canadian travel visa or through valid work permit, I can go to Canada but I guess I shall require US visa stamping on my passport based on my H1B work permit papers to get back to US.

Can I get the US visa stamping done on my passport in any US consulate in Ottawa, Canada? How/Where can I find the details about what I need to do for this? Appreciate if you can provide me any direction/help that I can avail in such situation.

Visa stamping from Canada can be done but not recommend. Better to get stamping from the consulate mentioned in I797B

You don't need to H1b visa stamping in passport if your canada visit is less than 30 days for US re entering . But you need to have valid I94 and I797B originals with you

It;s called Automatic Re validation . Check out the link

http://travel.state.gov/content/visas/en/general/automatic-revalidation.html

http://www.cbp.gov/sites/default/files/documents/auto_reva.pdf

NB: My advice is purely based on the data from govt websites . Proceed with all the required documents mentioned in the site.

You can get H1B stamping in Canada. As you are rightly thinking, you need a visa....TRV to enter Canada. As mentioned by other forum member, you can come back to US with in 30 days. Beyond that you Can't use automatic entry. The only difficulty you would have is if your processing is delayed beyond 30 days or If your application for H1B is not approved in Canada....then you cannot enter USA based on automatic entry even if less than 30 days.

Just in fill the application and you need to choose the consulate or embassy where h1 is processed and where you wish to go. It is like any other application.
