Hey @faduengineerp congratulations, do you have PR or do you live in Canada?

If not while filling out the "Create Applicant" form( https://ais.usvisa-info.com/ )

what did you select for
Country of Permanent Residence*
?

I live in the US but just became a PR holder earlier this year. Hence am confused on what to select there.

I also have the following situation and follow-up questions:

We (me and my wife)are H1B visa holders living in Washington, USA.

Our last H1B stamping was also in Canada in 2022 ( mine in Ottawa via Dropbox as I was living there and my wife's was in Toronto via interview as she was not living in Canada at the time)

Earlier this year we became Candian PR holders and we intend to move there in 2026.

However, until then, we want to get our passports stamped with the latest H1b extension.

I was filling the form at: https://ais.usvisa-info.com/en-ca/niv/schedule/62717733/applicants/new

  1. Country of Permanent Residence: As a Canadian PR holder who lives in the US, the tooltip says the following: "If you are not a citizen of the where you permanently reside, select the country where you are permitted to legally work, study or live.". As a Canadian PR holder who lives in the US, what would you or anyone recommend us selecting between Canada and the US? We of course live in the US and worry that our request for Dropbox will be rejected.
  2. Are you traveling from another country to apply for a U.S. visa in Canada? * It looks like folks answered no here but can someone confirm?
  3. In the DS-160 form does our home address need to be a Canadian address? Currently, we have entered our US address.

Any help will be greatly appreciated! thank you!

As per my observation or reading few messages in the forum. For 2nd question people have answered NO in order to get a dropbox. Not sure if that would have any impact. Other than that. You should be good for other two questions.

For 2nd question its your call to answer accordingly to get a dropbox or answer whats your situation actually is.

Hey @swan0206 thanks for your reply!

WHat about the 1st question: Country of Permanent Residence. Should it be Canada because we are PR holders now although we are living in the US?

Hi peacekeeprrr,

Were you able to schedule the interview? Was it an issue with the document?
I am in a similar boat for renewal.

Yes I had my interview and was approved.

General question like who is your employer, client, do you have your client letter(i didn't) where you will go to.

Hi, Anyone here recently used the dropbox in Toronto for H1B? I sent my documents on 11/25, received by them next day and then the application moved to 'Application Received' on Dec. 3rd. I see the late update changed to Dec 9th but status remained same. Anyone with recent experience can please share their timelines?

Hi I am in the exact same situation as yours, I received my PR this year, I live in the US and plan to move to Canada in 2026. Just wanted to confirm that one needs to be present in Canada for H1B stamping? Or can one send passport as a PR while continuing to be in the US itself?

I am in the same boat as you. Any updates on your case?

While it might seem possible to get an H1B visa stamp without leaving the US, doing so is highly risky and could have serious consequences.

Here's why:
  • It's likely illegal. US immigration law generally requires in-person interviews/dropbox in the country of residence for visa applications. Bypassing this requirement could be considered visa fraud.
  • It raises red flags. If you obtain a visa stamp or I-94 without proper documentation of leaving the country, it could create suspicion and jeopardize your future immigration applications. US officials might question your compliance with immigration laws.
  • The risks outweigh the benefits. Even if you succeed initially, the potential long-term consequences for your immigration status are significant.
Again I am not a lawyer and waiting to get my stamp in Canada as a Canadian PR residing in US.

Update on my case -

I just got an email to schedule my appointment. Earliest date that I got was Jan 7th. The email said the following.

"The U.S. Consulate in Toronto has received your visa application. However, your application does not qualify for the interview waiver program and you require a personal interview. Your passport will be returned to you through Canada post. Please proceed to schedule an appointment after you have received your passport."

I am a Canadian PR, my last stamping was through Dropbox in Toronto. The only thing that has changed for me is the employer. I am assuming that disqualifies for Dropbox now.
