Hi there,

One of my parents is accompanying my brother (a minor) to Canada for studies as a Guardian.
The visa they obtained was the Visitor V1 visa.

Is this the standard visa that a Guardian gets? Is there any other visa category they could have gotten?

There is no guardian visa.

What they received is a regular visitor visa which allows the to enter as a tourist only (but not live or work in Canada). When they enter Canada, they will most likely be allowed a six month visit (although the visa officer can chose to only grant a shorter visit). If they wish to stay longer, they will have to apply for an extension and hope it is approved.

Thanks for the quick reply.
Just one more thing. The V1 visa they were granted is for 4 years and Multiple Entry. Am I correct in assuming that this allows them to live there for the extent of the visa?

No it means the visa is valid for 4 years of multi entry up to a usual max stay of 6 months each entry which could be less as determine by CBSA at the border.

There is no guaranteed visa or stay for a parent or guardian to accompany a minor they would need to apply to extend stay as a visitor and there is no guarantee of approval.
