My study permit expired in May, 2011. I overstayed and left august 30th, 2011 from canada. I had a usa visa, so i re-applied from new york with my registration letter, proof of tuition, bank statements, transcripts and other documents as requested by the embassy, I sent in my application on the 8th of september and got my permit, 7days after. Leaving for canada soon, I am glad the issue was resolved because i did not want to stay illegally in canada, I was scared of leaving because i thought i would be refused because i overstayed but i am happy i re-applied for the permit.

Good news , thanks for sharing !!
Did you keep a cover letter explaning the situation and asked for it to be considered? or did they just grant the permit without any additional docs?

All the best

Hi,

Congrats !

You had a USA visa and I am sure that's the "only thing" which worked for you. Otherwise its just impossible to get visa/permit in overstayed cases. :)

Thank You, No i didnt, I only submitted an urgent processing form along with my application and i got this form when i got to the embassy because the guard at the entrance said it takes two weeks to a month but if i fill the form with a reason why I should get the permit on time, they might process it on time, it was on this letter that i explained my situation and that i needed to go back to school on time, that was all but i made sure i was truthful in filling out the rest of the forms.

Thanks Enfield, you have been really helpful, I am glad i had the visa if not I would have had to go back home and in that case I might have been refused. I am so happy, been worried sick at some point I was wondering if i made the right decision to leave canada but i am glad it all worked out, definitely applying for my permit on time for sure, the wait and anxiety in itself was not worth it. I wish everyone luck in gettin their visa/permit.

Not sure if it applies only to U.S. citizens or also to U.S. permanent residents and/or citizens of other visa-exempt nations as well, but when I need a sudy permit or spousal open work permit for my wife (either initial or extension) I simply driver to the border. I walk out 10 minutes later with the needed permits.
