I am not sure even if you are eligible to apply BOWP after your wp expires, If I were you I would apply on/before expiry date, online immediately.

My WP is expiring on 4th Oct, I have already applied BOWP online on 12th Sep without AOR and with an explanation letter. I am expecting AOR in next 7-8 days.

Did anybody get BOWP approved recently without submitting AOR ? I am also running into the same situation, I am afraid that I could be left with no time if I wait till I receive AOR. As per the current timelines if it takes 60 days to receive AOR, I am left with just 4 days before my current Closed WP expires.

Apply before your current WP expires. Apply by mail, that gives some breathing room for your AOR.

Hey Toby,

His application should be reached before expiry of his current WP which is only 4 more days, not advisable to take risk in mail.

The instruction guide states that,

If you are currently working in Canada and want to change conditions on your work permit (e.g. change length, employer or occupation), you must apply and obtain a new work permit. You should apply before making the change. For any permit, you should always apply at least 30 days before your status expires.

and

If your work permit expires after you have submitted your application for an extension but before you receive a decision in your application, you can stay in Canada under implied status, meaning you will be considered in status until a decision is given to you.

So the way I read the instructions is, you have to submit at least 30 days before your current WP expires.
NOT that your application has to reach CIC before it expires.

Correct me if I'm wrong here.

The 30 days strikes me as a recommendation, rather than a requirement (note the wording "should apply" and not "must apply"). I presume it's because work permits take a certain time to process and it's best to avoid implied status if you can.

my wp expiring on 25 oct and i am planning to apply my pr on 14 oct and my bridging work permit paper application on 21st oct. any suggestion please

None of them above advice what to do if current wp expired. it says apply within 30 days , assuming t would reach to them in 30 days for sure, Although one is eligible to apply for new wp but along with Restoration of visa after current wp is expired. And you won't be able to work I believe until you get your new wp.

For the OP or for anyone who was on implied status before getting the BOWP - do the remarks in the new permit mention anything about "implied" or "restored"? Apparently this affects how quickly one can get back on provincial health coverage.

Big Big thanks to AAND,LCM and other members. I am so happy got my BOWP approved. I submitted without AOR with expaination letter got it today in mail after tension of 2 months.

My current work permit (closed) expires on 30-Nov and I plan to file for PR under CEC on or around 10-Oct (awaiting IELTS results). When it would be relatively safer to send in my application for BOWP? Sometime mid of Nov.?

Also, my wife's work permit (closed) expires on 31-Jan-2014, can I request a BOWP for her within the same application?
She would be listed as a dependent in my application.

Please suggest.

EDIT: I just found out that spouse is not eligible for BOWP. How to address this situation? Will she get an Open Work Permit issued while I am given a BOWP?

Hi sumeetkarora,
I am also looking for the same information, my work permit and my wife's visitor record are getting expired on 31-Oct and I am expecting my AOR around 25th October and I have to apply for BOWP immediately after I receive AOR. Can I apply to extend my wife's visitor record or apply for Open WP along with my BOWP application online ?

Can anybody who is aware of the answer reply ?

according to the new OB485-A: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/resources/manuals/bulletins/2013/ob485A.asp

Spouse or Common-law Partner and Dependents

Certain conditions are required to be met by the holder of a Bridging WP, in order for their spouse to also be eligible for an open WP under R205(c)(ii).

In all cases the Bridging WP must be valid for longer than 6 months.

For spouses of CEC applicants: there are no set preconditions to be met by the principal CEC applicant.

Thus your wife is eligible for an open work permit..

Hi Guys,

I have applied my BOWP without AOR on 12th sep with expln letter. My Wp is xpiring on 4th oct, I am assuming to be on implied status and can continue to work because decision of BOWP may come by 15th Oct.

Secondly I am expecting my AOR by 28-29 Sep, Could someone please advice if there is any email id where I can send this AOR asap to BOWP processing department. Did someone send their AOR for in process BOWP application? I am not sure if they would reject/accept without AOR.

I did not send my AOR in with my BOWP application - they can check on the system with your UCI to see that status of the AOR.

The instructions and the operational bulletin 485A don't mention having to attach an AOR, it merely says that the visa officer checks GCMS for a positive eligibility assessment, and they would only need your client ID to do that. Nonetheless a few people believe they have been declined due to a lack of AOR. Is this the sole reason that those cases were declined? If so then perhaps this all turns on how individual visa officers interpret the bulletin. Which is worrying because a negative decision immediately puts one out of work.
