My husband's car is here in Canada, too. When he went to land as a PR, did you drive a Canadian plated car?
Yep, my mom drove us.

Just to add, you won't be able to get it plated until you pay the 220 and then they email you 24-48 hours afterwards. We're waiting for the form from RIV right now and we were told three times "DO NOT get it plated yet as it's in the system as the US plates and needs to keep them for the federal inspection"
Very good point. You need the RIV forms to get your inspections done and to plate the car. If you send the recall clearance letters to the RIV ahead of time, they will process them and keep them on file (30 days or so) leaving only the border paperwork. You can call them after you cross the border and pay the fee over the phone and have them e-mail you the form (ask the officer at the border to please fax the import and payment form to the RIV if you did the payment at the border).

So if you wanted to, you CAN do the safety/e-test afterwards.
Hmmm, you may want to double check what your Service Ontario will require the day you go plate the car. Ontario used to require the safety inspection to be done before you register the car unless the car is manufactured the same year you are registering it. You could choose to get it done at Canadian Tire at the same time that you get your import inspection done ;)

Yes, that's one of the things they will look for. If you go to the RIV website and check your specific car they'll give you a list of adjustments that may need to be made. Take a book when you get your import inspection done - it takes a long time as they have a loooooong checklist.

VERY thankful for OhCanadiana, she explained it to me, I just wanted to add that detail. Be sure to call the bridge beforehand, so you know what they need (our bridge needed the title 3 days before we imported it) :)
To clarify, I think parker24 means call the US side of the bridge so you know what they need to export it. Some just want a faxed copy of the title, others want the actual title 3 days before. Some want it 3 natural days and others 3 business days. Also check their working hours for vehicle export as they don't necessarily match the bridge operating hours. Look for the links to the border crossing info and phone numbers in step 4 of my how to export a car above.

We're in a similar situation .. just waiting on my husband's COPR as well .. I had thought we could add his car on his Goods to Follow form and import it a little later (1-2 months later), but from this thread I'm guessing we should plan to import the car when he lands?
If the car is in the US, you can import it whenever you want after landing and having it on his B4A as goods to follow it (years later even). It gets tricky if the car is already in Canada because the car is also a visitor and needs to change status. Changing that status gets tricky given the restrictions on Candian residents driving foreign plated cars for anything other that activities directly related to importing it so you're having to balance a lot of regulations to do it legally.

What I mean is after you import it you can get the safety and etest. You don't have to do these before you import it.

Oh, gotcha :). I think you can get a temporary registration and then do the safety test within a certain number of days and that was what you were referring to though I've gotten different info on that from different locations, and it's easy enough to do the same day as the import inspection at Canadian Tire if you schedule the appointment for both up front so I just didn't pursue it.

Thanks, OhCanadiana!! That clarifies things. His car is already here in Canada, but if legally he can drive it for activities related to the importing of the vehicle, that will be okay. In the meantime, we can share my car for everything else.

What is a driver's abstract and where do you get an original? And the driving record? I already have a letter from my US insurance company. Leaving to land on Wednesday. Where do i get these items?

Your state. It'll be something like Department of Transportation and they usually require money to get it.

A couple of questions (landing in Ontario)

If a vehicle is purchased in the US and has been in your possession for more than 6 months no GST+HST?

If you receive a temp work permit before getting PR through spousal sponsorship can you bring a car over during that temp work permit timeline? Do you have to pay taxes if you've had it shorter than 6 months?

My situation: PR app is in progress, hoping by timelines on this forum that I will land by October. I accepted a job in Ontario and the company is working through the LMO process. I'm anticipating a June start time. We're trying to decide if I should buy a new/used vehicle in the states and import it (paying cash) or buy one in Canada. We looked at prices in CAN this weekend and it's hard to grasp paying $11,000 more for the exact same vehicle.

Thanks.

If you bought a car within the past 6 months before landing, then yes, you will have to pay duty on it. You can bring it over, they might tell you that you will have to import it or they might tell you you can have 60 days to import it.

Thanks Parker. Do you know how it works with a temp work visa?

I honestly don't. I think it would be entirely up to the border agent.

Anyone imported a car to B.C.? We are planning to land on May 21-22. Hubby will be driving up to Vancouver for a couple days one week prior to get a few things settled. We were thinking about exporting & importing his Oregon-plated car at that time.

Questions:
Can we simply "export" the car thru US Customs from the US that day, and leave "importing" until landing?
Can we "export" from the US, "import" to Canada, but leave B.C. registration, etc. to wait until landing? i.e., once he's declared the car, can he drive it back to the US for a week without completing the entire process?

If any of this isn't clear, please feel free to PM me to discuss. This aspect of the move really is crazy-making! ???
