Hello,

Kind of silly question - I am planning to land with a goods to follow list, after getting a PR card, I will go to my country for couple of months, can I bring goods to follow from my country or it has to be from the country you first landed from which is USA.

Thanks,

You can bring them from where ever you wish, as long as you own them and they are used.

Thanks PMM,

All the goods needs to be old/used, like carpet, kitchen utensils, electronics etc? Can they be new?

Thanks,

They are supposed to used, here is what CBSA states"

"goods acquired by a settler for personal use, while
in transit to Canada from the former country of
domicile, that were owned, possessed, and used abroad
by the settler prior to his or her arrival in Canada."

There is an exception for wedding presents received within 3 months of emigration.

If you want to read the whole thing: http://cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/publications/dm-md/d2/d2-2-1-eng.pdf

How I will be able to transfer this through a moving company? I have no one who can send these to me after I am gone from USA, so if I give all my stuff to a moving company - how I will be able to receive them in Canada duty free? Do I need to send all the stuff first, and get "Goods to Follow" list stamped from Customs when I get there physically and take the stamped list to the moving company in order for them to have it released from customs duty free? Is this the correct procedure?

Do they charge per day some amount if goods keep on sitting at their port or the warehouse of Canadian Customs? If this is the case, I have to plan how to release them immediately or send them a day before my departure.

Please shed some light on this,

Thanks,

OK, got my answer by reading the whole memorandum, it says they will keep it for 40 Days and after that period the goods will become unclaimed or you may have to penalties.

It is better to get to Canada first and then ask the moving company to send the goods, this way you can have the goods to follow list stamped, the shipping company then take it to their storage and charge you some amount for storing it until you get it delivered.

Does the rule about everything being used also apply to returning canadians? Canadians that have been out of Canada for more then 5 years? It only says they have to be used, doesn't specify time limit ie use once or for a week, depending on what it is, AND I just found out we can't take our mattresses from our beds unless we fumigate them!

What happens if there are no goods to follow? Living in the tropics, most of our clothing is useless in Canada, and we gave it all away. I (sponsor) have a train car in storage in Canada, with everything we'll need for the house etc. and we managed to cart everything we need with us - pretty good packing, if I do say so myself!
Will there be any issue if we have no goods to follow?
thanks!

Its totally up to you, if you do not have any goods to follow then you don't need that form. Only if you plan to bring something in the future you can bring it duty free from your country.

Thank you for sharing the link, I didn't have that. Thought I should just make a list and type all I am taking along to CAN.

hmmm... luckily I won't bring that much as they only keep the shipment during 40 days only. It is better to buy those I can miss and leave them behind such as sofa's, beds, chairs, etc. Just clothing, personal items and electronics, (expensive) carpets, arts etc.
