Good afternoon,

So i am Canadian but currently living abroad for business.
But i am pregnant now, and was wandering if i should go back to Canada to give birth there or just stay where i am.

I understand that in all cases the Canadian passport will be given to my baby in all cases with different benefits but i just want you to advice me...which is better? because i know that the Canadian laws change..so which situation is "safer" and better for me and my baby?

put in mind i cant totally move back to Canada yet because of my business so my visit there will be temporary...

thank you in advice,

Right now you are not covered by the Canadian health care system since you have been living outside of Canada and don't meet the residency requirements to qualify for free health care. If you return to Canada and have your baby here, you will have to pay for all of the costs of the birth and any other appointments / tests out of your own pocket. I would budget at least $10,000 for these expenses - although the costs could end up being a lot higher if there are any complications. Are you able to pay for the costs of the birth in Canada? If not, then I would recommend you give birth where you are now.

How did you become a Canadian citizen? If it was by descent, the child would not be Canadian.
If the child is born in Canada, it's children would be Canadian by default.
If it becomes Canadian by descent (born where you are now) it's children would not be Canadian by default, unless they were born in Canada.

Unless you are wiling to relocate to Canada for over 6 months you will have to pay for your birth because there are residency requirements to receive healthcare. You may also have to wait up to 3 months to qualify for coverage.

So, regardless of where the child is born, it will be a Canadian citizen.
