Hi.

I have a friend who is in Canada on a visitor visa. She is pregnant and she is wondering if she gives birth in canada, is it true that she has to remain in canada for six months after giving birth? She is not a canadian citizen or permnant resident but she heard that sheis not allowed to leave canada for six months after giving birth.

Is this true?

No - there is no such rule.

But note that she will be responsible for all medical related expenses for having the baby here. Healthcare wouldn't apply in her case. The only benefit is that the baby can become a Canadian (by birth) if she opts for it

she can leave canada when she want, but will be expensive for her to give a birth without insurance minimum 8K$

Okay. Thank you all for the replies,. =)

You can't if you're already pregnant. No insurance company will cover you.

In case a regular Visitor to Canada is not yet pregnant, there is a plan that covers up to 80% of the cost for prenatal care, delivery, and nursing care for a maximum of $10,000. Such coverage only applies to an insured individual, whose pregnancy commenced at least 1 month past the effective date.

If a regular Visitor to Canada is already pregnant, there is a Medical Emergency insurance package that covers pregnancy related emergencies including bleedings, abdominal pain, miscarriage, etc. up to the 31st week of applicant's pregnancy period.
