Hey Everyone,

First off I have a Master's Degree and work in the Canadian Federal Government. So my situation is not precarious (another broke student)

I met my Serbian GF on exchange in Russia well over a year ago. Since then she's been trying to come to Canada to visit me and got two visa rejections (the second one was done a month after to address all the holes that they found in the first application. I realize in hindsight probably not the best idea). I actually made a thread about it. We have since obtained ATIP notes that we will pass onto a lawyer. It seems that the major problem is that she's a Serbian National but is doing her Master's in Russia, meaning insufficient ties in both Serbia and in Russia.

Anyways. She just got accepted to study abroad at Carleton University for 1 semester from September - December 2017. It will be at the Master's level. She has a scholarship which will be covering her tuition and works as a babysitter and translator. She will have around 10-11K CAD in her bank account .

Since it's less than 6 months, they are telling her to apply for a visitor's visa using the invitation letter Carleton gave her.

Just wondering if these rejections would have an impact on her being awarded a visa to come study here. I understand if it was a study permit it would not be a problem as it's two different mechanisms, but since it's still under the visitor visa it makes me nervous.

Any help/comments would be appreciated! She has a laywer in Serbia in mind but maybe it's better to retain a laywer in Ottawa (I live and work here as a Federal Public Servant)

Is it worth even mentioning our relationship? I assume that they can easily find this information and so that's it worth addressing rather than having them find out and give a grounds for immediate refusal.

Thanks

Yes - it's possible the previous refusals could impact the visitor visa approval. However she has a very good reason for being here, so she can definitely apply and hope for the best. The school letters should definitely help.

FYI - past refused visitor visas can in fact impact study permits. Doesn't matter that they are different application streams.

Thanks Scylla,

Is it still necessary to discuss our relationship? Particularly as she intends on living with me (me cutting down on her living expenses). I understand that the University would be the one with the invitation letter, but would I also write an invitation letter? or show in someway that I'm 'supporting her' (proof of our relationship, pay stub, lease, etc.)

And should be applying out of Serbia (through Vienna) or in Moscow? (She will return to Russia after her semester in Carleton) Her Serbian lawyer usually deals with clients that send their material to Vienna, and she has been rejected twice from Moscow...

Thanks

She needs to show that she has enough funds to cover her living expenses without living with you. Even if you write an invitation letter - she won't be approved for the study permit unless she can demonstrate she has enough funds to support herself. Keep in mind that she won't be allowed to work in Canada if she's coming here as an exchange student.

OK, thank you very much. So she would then need roughly 10K Canadian in her bank (copy of bank statement) (The university advises 10K for 2 semesters), along with letters from her parents confirming any additional financial support, and letters from her two employers confirming that 1) She works for them and 2) She will be returning to work for them after her exchange.

Am I missing anything?
