Getting Residency after Post Graduation Work Permit

Hi Everyone,

I have a few questions about my status in Canada and how to proceed in getting my permanent residency.

1. I graduated from a 4 year Paralegal degree and obtained a post graduate work permit for 3 years. My first question is, in order to get my permanent residency, do I have to complete 1 year in the field I completed my degree in, or can I work anywhere and still apply for permanent residency?

2. My second situation is that I have been accepted to law school in the UK (where I am originally from), if I decide to go to law school in the UK with the intent of coming back to Canada, how would I apply for permanent residency? Since I know PGWP are only offered once, would I have to apply for a regular work permit?

My main goal is to get residency in Canada. I am just unsure if the best way to do that is to complete the process through my current PGWP, and if going back to school in the UK would negatively effect my chances of applying for permanent residency.

Any help or advise would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance,

Sinead

1 No it doesn't but to be eligible the work must be in either NOC A, B or O
2, You could apply for the PGWP (if eligible) and you could return to the UK for your studies, and if there is any time left on your PGWP, you could return and finish it out.
3, You could also apply for Express Entry once you finish your UK degree and have at least 1 year of skilled work .
4. So you have to make the decision for yourself stay and work at a skilled job in Canada for a year and be eligible for EE CEC

Seems the OP has a decision on their priority in life to either try for immigration in the next few years off the back of the PGWP assuming they can get experience as a licensed paralegal having invested already 4 years or any other noc 0,A or B job but still only be a paralegal.

Or return to the UK to attend law school establish the base for career in law which may be another 3 year commit as I understand it following which they would need work experience to then qualify to apply for immigration at some future date a few years ahead, maybe 5/6 ahead.

The optimum of course might have been set out with a PGWP to get the Canadian work experience sorted then decide on immigration or law school, however I would imagine that competition for law school places is such that getting another opportunity might not be easy.

Thank you so much for your reply. It was very helpful, and I will defiantly look further into the noc 0,A or B.
