I am an U.S citizen and im getting married to my faince who is a canadian citizen. HE lives in ontario. what do we have to do to get a marriage certificate and /or marriage license. what do i need to have ? PLz Help.

hello a_larae3!

when you go to city hall to get your marriage license... they are going to ask to see identification, they are going to want to know where you are getting married, when you are getting married, and who is officiating the ceremony. that's all you need! my husband and i took our passports, the other information and it took about 5 minutes for them to put everything together... we signed some stuff... and had our ceremony 6 days later. so so easy.
i hope it goes well... if you have any other questions let me know. and... congratulations! :)

hey thank you. I was jus wondering because i Looked on the ontario site. and it says that i need a certificate of landing ?what is that? because me and him are getting married in ontario.

Have you heard of a place called port dover? Do youknow how to get a hold of them we want to get maried there?

You're misreading the info: Getting Married in Ontario says you need to "apply for the marriage licence in person. Make sure you and your partner bring identification, such as a birth certificate (along with any change of name certificates), current passport, Record of Immigrant Landing or Canadian citizenship card, along with photo identification to prove your current legal name and age". In other words, a Record of Landing is a valid form of identification, but you won't have a Record of Landing yet as you're still not eligible to be sponsored for permanent residence. So you can apply for a marriage licence with identification such as your passport and/or birth certificate.

we got married in Ontario, Mississauga.
we needed to have 2 ID identifications, me as a foreigner had to show passport and birth certificate. canadian hubby had to show any 2 ID identifications. fee of marriage license is 135$. it was very quick and easy.

One thing to mention about getting married in Ontario is that it takes 10 weeks to get the marriage certificate, after it is signed at your wedding. This is the document you need in order to apply for PR. So you get your marriage license from city hall, where you present your ID and they type up the marriage license for you. Then you go and get married, and then you mail it off and it takes 10 weeks for them to process a marriage certificate and send it to you. So what this means is that it is going to be at least 10 weeks from your wedding date until you apply for PR. This might be a bit frustrating, as you probably would like to send off your PR app as soon as possible. So just a suggestion - you might want to get married in the U.S., where in some states at least, marriage certificates are processed much quicker.
