Hello,

My brother applied for Permanent Residence through the Immigration pathway for Colombian, Haitian and Venezuelan nationals with family in Canada at the end of last year. He applied as a single person. He received his CoPR in April of this year. He got married in September and as per IRCC instructions we filled out the form to notify that he got married and asked for next steps. The IRCC replied today:

"
We verified the information you provided and can confirm that it is not necessary to update your information if you do not currently have an application in process with IRCC.

Since a final decision was already made on your application, the information you provided will not be added to your file.

If applicable, we invite you to include this information when you submit a new application."

I understand that he cannot land in Canada with the same CoPR since his marital status has changed. Should we contact the IRCC again? I'm not sure if he should still come to Canada with his same CoPR? Please advise, thanks.

It's perhaps implied but you left out the most important information: did he already land (arrive) in Canada / was he in Canada when the (e)COPR is issued? Or in more simple terms: is he already a PR?

If he is already a PR, there is nothing to do (except sponsor his spouse, if he wishes). The key is to advise them before becoming a PR.

If he has not landed yet: YES, he should contact again. He should advise them again, and make sure to keep a copy that he advised them.

When does his COPR expire?

He is not a PR yet. He applied outside Canada and has not landed yet. He is planning on coming and all the IRCC communications say that he should advise them of a marital status change but their response was confusing. He has submitted the form again, hopefully they can give clearer instructions this time. His CoPR expires at the end of February of 2025.

Thanks.
