Hey

I am wanting to travel to Canada from the UK in May next year, I am 20 years old and am a UK CITIZEN.

I want to work as a volunteer on a ranch for 6 months and have read that you don't need a visa if you are only staying for 6 months.

If I can prove its only a fun ranch and not a paid job and am coming home after 6 months and I buy an open return ticket will I be allowed in?

I know from March I will have to get an ETA but this is a lot easier than getting a work visa

Thanks

Ollie

You may still need a work permit even thought the work is unpaid. Are there others on the ranch who will be doing the same or similar work as you who will be paid? Is the work you are doing the type of work people would normally be paid for? Will you be getting room and board in exchange for your volunteering? If the answer to any of these questions is yes, then you need a work permit to volunteer.

Everyone else on the Ranch will be unpaid. They are all voluntary positions set up to help people all over the world get a bit of adventure. I can not comment on whether it would normally be paid for because it is just fun work. Yes I would be getting lodgings but what if I was to pay for my room? Would that make a difference?

I want to go out in May but how would I do that if the visa doesn't open until April and its only open for 15 minutes? What if I miss my spot. I can't phsyically stare at the website 24 hours a day until April.

Yes - that makes a difference. Room and board are a form of payment/compensation. You'll need a work permit if you want to take this position.

Nowhere does it say that you have to physically stare at the web site 24/7 - that would be ridiculous. CIC will announce the dates sometime next year. You will then know exactly when you have to be at your computer to apply. Just make sure you check the site once a week until the application dates are announced.
