Hi
I am a software Engineer workin on H1 B in the US for more than two years now. The NOC for my job description is 2173 which is related to 0213 but based on the job responsibilities I do not think they match with 0213, I know that I have a good chance of qualifying under the Alberta PNP program, however I would prefer to immigrate through the FSW,
1.can anyone please share there experiences , especially people having occupation with NOC as 2173-4 or people whose NOCs did not match thejobs found on the new 38 occupation list, who were selected/ rejected who recently applied through the FSW, or things I can put in my application to improve my chances of qualifying.

2.Is there anyone who thinks it will be a futile excercise to apply through FSW and I should only try for the PNP,

3. Just to add, I meet all the employee requirements listed for 0213 however the job duties are not similar to my current job responsibilities, would that make a difference?

Thanks

Hi Mate
They did not check the job requirement, but only the title with corresponding duties.

Cheers
So does that I can go ahead and fill in NOC as 0213 as its on the 38 occupation list and in cas eof job title put in Software Engineer which is applicable to me?

Note the operative word for 0213 is MANAGER

2173 - software engineer is not included in AB PNP SRS stream or even FSW;
2171 - analysts if computer systems is included in AB PNP SRS stream, but not in FSW. 0213- manager for computer systems is included in both.
There is strictly a vast difference of responsibilities in being a software engineer & a manager; job suties are of greater importance than your designation.
With your current responsibilities, it looks more like you need an employment-offer to qualify. So best of luck.

what about the job title CIS Supervisor?
I'm an IT Supervisor for a Systems and Technology corporation in the U.S. My job description and main duties match NOC 0213, but my employer's letter of employment states 'Supervisor' as my title. In addition, my paycheck and annual performance reviews clearly show what I believe to be managerial level decision making and compensation. I believe the only factor that could come into question would be my title. I've looked to see if there's an NOC code for "Computer and Information Systems Supervisors", but I can't find one listed. This title is only listed in the "Classified elsewhere" section under NOC 0213, but there is no '4-digit' code for it. Does anyone know where you could find the lead description and list of duties for CIS Supervisors?

I'd appreciate your insights and best of luck to you!!

They say it should be in the 217 category but it's not so your options for NOC are limited to 0213 and something from the 217 category. When looking at all occupations at http://www5.hrsdc.gc.ca/NOC-CNP/app/occupation_index.aspx?lc=e there is no other management position that seems to fit and the group of 217 includes only these:

217 Computer and Information Systems Professionals

2171 Information Systems Analysts and Consultants
2172 Database Analysts and Data Administrators
2173 Software Engineers and Designers
2174 Computer Programmers and Interactive Media Developers
2175 Web Designers and Developers

Leon - I appreciate your reply. I can't find another management position that fits either and, like you said, CIS Supervisor is not under any of the 217x occupations. So, that leaves me with only one option: NOC 0213, although my title does not include the word 'Manager'. Thank you.

It does say in the guide that it's more important to match your job duties than title so I think it should be fine.

It's at http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/applications/guides/EG72.asp where it says:

The initial description and list of main duties must match what you did at your last job(s).

It also says in the NOC tutorial at http://www5.hrsdc.gc.ca/NOC-CNP/app/training.aspx?lc=e#19 that the title is not very important because companies make up their own titles without consulting the NOC so the titles are not standardized.

If I were in your place, I would have applied under 0213, although a 'superviser' is not a 'manager';
you have nothing to lose;
