What do you mean? You want to change from Sanjit Patel to John Smith? Why?

Maybe this helps.. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Name_change#Canada

You could give your self an English name, many people do it cause its hard to pronounce their real name

Here are some examples, but stick to the original syllable

Harjinder becomes Harry
Balwinder becomes Barry
Dong Zeng becones Donald Zeng
Son Kim becomes Sam Kim
Balakrishnaramalinglam becomes Bally
Petroshenko becomes Peter

Maybe OP just want to add a Christian name such as John, Mary, etc to his/her existing name. If he/she wants it to appear on his/her PR card, then they would need to make a name change.

You would have to change your name legally in your province. Google (your province name) and changing name and you will find some links.

Some provinces have restricions on having lived in the province for a certain amount of time or taking a certain amount of time as well as you have to sign a statement saying that you are not changing your name in order to dodge bill collectors. It is of course not free either. I have heard of fees of $200-300 for a name change. May be different between provinces too.

Once you have legally changed your name, you should also have it changed on your PR card as well as on your passport and other id.

You can also take up a nickname without legally changing your name. I have worked with people who had nicknames like Mike or Tony but in reality were named something much longer and harder to pronounce.

Why waste a brain cell thinking when you have the option to be spoon fed?

Actually I don't want to change my name officially. I like to use an English nick name. Does that cause any problems and conflicts with official papers and IDs which have the original name on it.

No, it doesn't have to. When you introduce yourself to people in a casual or work setting, you can say for example that you're name is (nickname) or you can say my name is (legal name) but please call me (nickname). It will not be a problem where you work and people where you work will not even know your real name except those who have to do with paperwork like pay slips, taxes etc.

When you do official business, you give your legal name. When in between like giving your name for utilities, customer accounts etc, you can tell them that your name is (nickname) (legal name) and they may use both.

Thanks that is what I was looking for. What name should I then write on my resume?

No idea what your name is.. maybe Harbhajan "Harry" Singh or Yogendra "Yogi" Singh ?

On your resume write whatever first name you want, plus surname.
